Reykjavík Premium Whale Watching

Search for the wildlife and explore seas on the adventure of a lifetime on our premium, small groups whale watching tour. Our specially engineered RIB boats get you closer and faster to the whales and puffins than our bigger boats. These stable and safe boats also allow us to search a bigger area, thus increasing your likelihood of viewing the whales, dolphins and birdlife.
This fantastic whale watching tour starts from the Old Harbour in downtown Reykjavík. First we ride out to one of three islands close to the harbour and check out the breeding puffins (season 1 May - 20 August). Next we head out further in search of whales and dolphins. Seeing the wildlife as up close as you can from our RIB boats is a once in a lifetime adventure and experience. After exploring the wonders of the sea we sail back to Reykjavík, where we will ride along the city shore line. Along the coast we will have views of the city from a unique angle, Sólfarið viking ship sculpture and mesmerising Harpa Concert Hall.
The tour is not suitable for children shorter than 145 cm (usually under 10 years old)!

Thingvellir national park

Thingvellir National Park (Þingvellir) is one of the best geological wonders in Iceland. This UNESCO World Heritage Site and Game of Thrones film location is only a 45-minute drive from Reykjavík. Explore an epic Icelandic landscape, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet!

Þingvellir means assembly fields and in the year 930 AD, Iceland’s historic democratic parliament – one of the first in the world – was founded there. Most Icelandic people regard Þingvellir as a sacred place, a place of great beauty and an incredible stepping stone in their history.

Geysir Geothermal Park

Although the Great Geysir is less active these days, it did lend its name to hot springs all over the world. It was the first geyser described in a printed source.

Gullfoss Falls

Gullfoss (translated to ‘Golden Falls’) is one of Iceland’s most iconic and beloved waterfalls, found in the Hvítá river canyon in Southwest Iceland. In sunny weather, regardless of the season, an incredibly beautiful rainbow stands above it.

Secret Lagoon Hot Spring

Daily 10:00-20:00

The Secret Lagoon is a man-made pool fed by naturally occurring hot springs in the geothermal area next to the village of Flúðir in southern Iceland. It is the oldest pool in the country, and one of the most popular for locals and tourists alike. The pool was constructed in 1891 and is officially the oldest swimming pool in the entire country. Icelanders simply call it 'the old pool' or 'gamla laugin'. There are changing rooms and lockers, showers, and a cafe selling light snacks. Towels and swimsuits can be rented.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Skógafoss is one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland, boasting a height of approximately 60 meters and a width of 25 meters. You can walk right up to it, but be prepared to get drenched. It's truly overwhelming to stand next to this powerful natural wonder. Due to the substantial amount of mist it generates, you'll often witness beautiful rainbows on sunny days.

30 min

Gljufrabui Waterfall

The 40 metre (131 feet) tall Gljúfrabúi is hidden behind a considerable cliff which faces out towards Iceland’s South Coast and the Atlantic Ocean. Because of its effective ‘hiding place’, Gljúfrabúi is overlooked by most travellers, even though thousands of people visit Seljalandsfoss, less than a kilometre away, every day.
The route into the cavern is mildly challenging and you run the risk of getting wet, so only attempt to reach Gljúfrabúi if you are in a decent state of health and confident on your feet. It should only be attempted when there is no ice on the ground.

Drive

Seljavallalaug Swimming Pool

A 25-meter outdoor pool in the south of Iceland. Seljavallalaug pool is one of the oldest pools in Iceland and was built in 1923. Located in the open air in a picturesque mountain gorge. Water temperature 20-30 C

You’ll marvel at the views of Dyrhólaey, a peninsula that is the southernmost tip of the country, and the marvellous Mýrdalsjökull glacier in the distance. After leaving the beach, the group will head to the famous Sólheimasandur plane wreck. This relic has been resting in the sand since 1973. Following the plane, you will drive to the Jökulsá river and up the foot of the mountain.

The spellbinding glacial landscape and calm waters will make you feel like you have been transported into another world. Your guide will lead you around the glacier and in between icebergs to admire these natural wonders from a perspective that can only be seen while on the water. After a period of gliding along the still surface of the lagoon, you’ll head back to shore with a lifetime of memories.

Drive

Dyrhólaey peninsula and black arch

Once you are on top in the higher area of Dyrhólaey you will have a breathtaking view to all directions. To the north you see Mýrdalsjökull glacier, to the east you will see the beautiful black lava seastacks Reynisdrangar and to the west you can view the endless black coastline and then in front of the peninsula there is a huge black arch of lava reaching out into the sea which the peninsula takes its name from. Dyrhólaey literally means "the hill island with the door hole". It's 120 m high and you are able to walk the arch or the bridge if you are not afraid of heights. Up there you can also find a spectacular and big "castle shaped" lighthouse.

Drive

30 min

Reynisfjara Black Beach

With its enormous basalt stacks, roaring Atlantic waves, and stunning panoramas, Reynisfjara is widely considered to be the most beautiful example of Iceland’s black sand beaches.
Reynisdrangar is so amazing that it was featured in Season 7 of the HBO Series Game of Thrones; you can spot it in a few scenes shot ‘North of the Wall’.
The sea stacks themselves are home to thousands of nesting seabirds. Species that can be found here include puffins, fulmars, and guillemots, making it a must-see location for all birdwatchers out there.

The Village of Vík (or Vík í Mýrdal)

Vik is the southernmost city on the island and one of the few that does not have a port. At the top of the hill stands the main attraction - a white church with a red roof. The church offers a panoramic view of the settlement, the beach and the basalt columns of Reynisdrangar. On the beach there is a statue of the Traveler: a man looking into the distance. It has it`s twin in the port of Hull, UK. The two monuments are facing each other, symbolizing the centuries-old trade alliance between Iceland and the British Kingdom.

Skaftafetl National Park

Skaftafetl, together with another national park, Vatnajökull, make up the largest protected area in Europe. Sunny weather, atypical for the south of Iceland, is a constant occurrence here. So don't be surprised when you see a tender birch forest and bright colors of heather fields. Even higher above sea level, the landscape changes to a desert of black sand, and then to the Skaftafellsjökull glacier, a volcano and a mountain, lakes with ice and ice caves. The pearl of this park is the Svartifoss waterfall.

Vatnajökull Glacier

It is the largest glacier in Iceland, covering 8% of the country's territory. The ice thickness in some places reaches 1 km. Like most glaciers in Iceland, there are several volcanoes lurking beneath it. Only a part of it, the tongue of the Vatnajökull glacier, the so-called "dead ice," is located in the Skaftafell National Park. These are the edges isolated from the main glacier, which, unfortunately, do not grow or renew, but gradually melt.

20 min

Svartifoss waterfall

Its name is translated from Icelandic as "Black Waterfall". It owes its name to the black basalt columns that frame the water stream like a majestic throne. Geometrically correct, the pillars are like the creations of fantastic creatures. However, scientists have proven that it's all about physical processes. The appearance of the waterfall has inspired architects to create many architectural objects in Iceland with a design in the form of stepped pillars.
The hike from the Visitor Center to the waterfall is 1.5 km uphill.

Drive

45 min

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a natural wonder of our world formed by the constant melting and breaking of the glacier.
The lake has grown at varying rates because of glacial melting. It is now 1.5 kilometres away from the ocean’s edge and covers an area of about 18 km2. It recently became the deepest lake in Iceland, at over 248 metres (814 feet), as glacial retreat extended its boundaries. The Glacial Lagoon is part of Vatnajokull National Park.

Zodiac Boat Tour on the Glacial Lagoon

During the excursion you sail among the huge icebergs in the picturesque scenery of Jökulsárlón. On the Zodiac we are able to cover large areas of the lagoon and get closer to the icebergs than on the amphibian. When possible the Zodiac goes almost all the way up to the glacier (as close as safe).

10 min

The Diamond beach

Diamond Beach is a black sand beach located just beyond the bridge from the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. The ice pieces are the remnants of the large icebergs from the lagoon. The ice really sparkles in the sun, just like diamonds. They stand out so well in contrast to the black sand. You can find some really large chunks, along with lots of smaller ones. You can walk around them and take some awesome pictures.
Prepare to be amazed at the most popular beach in Iceland!

Heimaey - the Northern Pompeii

Vestmannaeyjar is home to around 4,500 people, and eight million puffins every summer. Many millions of other birds migrate there for breeding and feeding. Most people on the island live off fishing. They hold an annual festival. People are then allowed to catch a few puffins to share at the festival, or to eat at home.

Eldfell - Iceland's Youngest Volcano

It was 1.55 am on January 23rd 1973 when a huge volcanic eruption began without any sign of warning on the outskirts of Vestmannaeyjar town on Heimaey Island, south of Iceland. It forced the entire population to evacuate their homes and set sail to mainland Iceland. A large number of buildings were buried under lava and ash, many were completely destroyed but others were later unearthed and saved.

Volcano eruption museum Eldheimar

Daily 11.00-17.00
The exhibition focuses on the 1973 volcanic eruption in Vestmannaeyjar, without a doubt one of Iceland's biggest natural disaster. Visitors get a glimpse into peoples lives on Heimaey before the eruption that would change their lives forever. The people of Heimaey had to leave their homes in the middle of the night and evacuate the island, many of them never saw their homes or any of their belongings ever again.
The show also covers the Surtsey eruption, the island that emerged from the ocean south of Heimaey in 1963. The Surtsey eruption lasted for almost 4 years and ever since only scientists have been allowed on the island in order to monitor how new ecosystems come to life.

Colored Mountains Landmannalaugar

Nature is so creative! You will be amazed by colorful rheolite mountains and lava fields. Oxygen from the air and water interacted with various minerals and oxidized them, painting the mountains with all kinds of colors. Under different lighting and weather conditions, the rocks and sand appear yellow, red-brown with splashes of green, purple and blue. And the blue sky and fluffy clouds, mirror-like purity of streams and rivers, white snow and cold transparency of ice became a luxurious frame for this masterpiece.

Observe the seals at Ytri Tunga Beach

You should definitely turn off the road at this spot for two reasons. Firstly, unlike most beaches in Iceland, it has light golden sand, not black, which is very rare. Secondly, a large colony of seals lives here. They play and hunt in the bay, and also rest on the warm rocks with their families. The best time to visit them is in the summer months, when there are much more chances to see them.

Drive

The Black Church of Budir

Located on the south side of Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Búðakirkja is a local parish church that dates back to 1703. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, this quaint black church is one of the most photographed churches in Iceland. Búðakirkja is fully operational and has a historic graveyard too.

Drive

Fishing village Arnarstapi and Gatklettur Arch

The small fishing town of Arnarstapi was once a bustling port and trading center serving the West Coast. Today, it is still a busy harbor in the summer months, serving private small fishing and cruise ships. Near the town there is a trail along the rocky shore, at the beginning of which you will be greeted by a stone giant, Bardur, a half-troll, half-man. After passing him, the path will lead to an unusual rock called Gatkletur, which translates as "a rock with a hole in it."

Drive

Vatnshellir cave and Lóndrangar rock formations

Vatnskellir (from the Icelandic water cave), 200 meters long, was opened in 2011. It has 2 galleries with lava formations, which are connected by a narrow spiral staircase. Further, on the coast, other basalt formations, the Londrangar rocks, rise from the sea to a height of 61 and 75 meters. They are closely circled by birds, and among them you can find dead ends!

It's hard to believe that in the past, and even now, farmers do not use the pastures near the rocks, as they are believed to belong to the elves who live there.

Drive

Snæfellsjökull - glacier volcano

The Snaefellsjökull Glacier is the main tourist magnet on the peninsula. This place is an active volcano and a huge glacier 1446 meters high, which is considered one of the seven largest energy centers on Earth. Locals say that the glacier has a mysterious power, and it is also the setting for Jules Verne's famous novel Journey to the Center of the Earth. On clear days, you can easily see it from Reykjavik, it is so big.

Drive

Kirkjufell Mountain and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall

The mountain-church was named after its shape, which resembles the dome of a church. The perfect proportions made it the most photogenic mountain in Iceland. And in most cases, photographers try to capture both the small Kirkjufell waterfall and the beauty herself in the camera lens.

Drive

Shark Museum

We explain the process and why the shark meat needs a six months process with a personal guided tour. We also tell you in a simple way about the Greenland sharks biology and the sharks important in Icelandic history. After the visit you can have a look at the drying house where the shark meat is hanging. And of cause you can try the shark meat inside the museum. Sharks are fascinating beings that are so different from everything we consider normal.

Perlan

Perlan (Icelandic for "pearl") is the city's boiler house, a building with a blue hemispherical dome roof, located on top of Öskjuhlíð, the largest hill in Reykjavík, Iceland. The hill is covered with forest, but Perlan is visible from almost all parts of the city.
The building is 25.7 meters high. Perlan resembles a daisy, each "petal" of which is a hot water tank heated by thermal waters. On the ground floor of the building there is a winter garden - an exhibition space of about 10 thousand square meters. Concerts, exhibitions and fairs are held here. There are several shops inside. One of the former water tanks houses The Saga Museum, which exhibits wax figures telling about the life and culture of the Icelanders. On the fourth floor there is an observation tower with panoramic telescopes installed in each of the six corners of the tower.
Above the observation tower, in a rotating glass dome-shaped part of the building, there is a bar and restaurant. In two hours, this part of the building makes a complete rotation around its axis. At night, the dome is illuminated by lights.

Weather in Iceland

  • Many think that it is constantly cold in Iceland, but this is not so. Mostly this is because of the Gulf Stream, flowing along the west and south of Iceland, bringing warmth from the Caribbean Sea. This also means that mild Atlantic air mixes with cold Arctic air from the north and causes sudden and frequent weather changes, bringing the country many winds and storms, and the southern part more precipitation than the northern.
  • The average temperature in Reykjavik in winter is about +2 and in summer about +12. In winter, the temperature in Reykjavik can drop to -10 and rise to +10. In summer it can drop to +6 and rarely rise to +25.

Saving on groceries in Iceland

The supermarkets that offer the lowest prices

Bonus

Bonus Iceland stores are mostly located near Reykjavik/the surrounding area, with a few in west Iceland. Due to minimal customer service, a raw warehouse interior, and the size of the conglomerate's market share, Bonus can underbid all of its competitors. Surveys almost always find it to be Iceland's cheapest grocery store. Despite having a more limited selection, they still have more than enough for anyone’s basic needs. Unless you’re a gourmand, Bónus will be more than enough for you.

Bonus stores are open on weekdays and weekends but they close sooner than most supermarkets, usually at 18:30.

Kronan

Kronan is slightly more expensive than Bónus but offers a considerably larger variety of food items, including an impressive selection of organic and preservative-free groceries.
Kronan are open on weekdays and weekends. They usually close a little later than Bonus, at 8:00 PM.

Nettó

Netto is a combination grocery and department store that is home to an interesting array of everyday items, ranging from wool to kitchen utensils, as well as relatively cheap groceries.

The stores are open both on weekdays and weekends. Many are open 24 hours.

The budget supermarkets often only label products in Icelandic, and they have fewer staff members, meaning lines can be longer or it could be more difficult to find help if you need it.

Tips for shopping in Iceland

  • Some grocery stores in Iceland don’t offer much, so it is good to stock up in larger cities before you head off. Iceland still has a lot of remote areas and you should be well prepared!
  • In the big cities, Icelandic supermarkets may stay open until 8-9 pm if you are lucky. If you are in a more rural area, some grocery stores close as early as 18.00. The grocery stores in Iceland close even earlier on the weekends, and some may not be open at all on a Sunday.
  • Google Translate is your friend! In some of the budget supermarkets, the products will only be labeled in Icelandic. Make your life easier and be sure you’re getting the food you want by using the Google Translate app, where you can either type in the product name or scan it with your phone camera, and the app can directly translate what is in the picture.
  • Bring your own bag with you or prepare to pay a few kronor for paper bags. Iceland is very focused on sustainability, so plastic bags aren’t available at most grocery stores.
  • Read the label on meat very carefully. Icelandic people have a wider palate compared to Americans, and unique meats such as foal or whale are readily available in supermarkets. If that isn’t something you want to try, then double-check your meat products.
  • Like many places in Western Europe, credit cards or contactless payments are the most typical in Iceland. When using a self-checkout at a supermarket, cash is not accepted.

Alcohol

  • Due to the fact that alcohol consumption was prohibited in Iceland for most of the 20th century, Icelandic alcohol culture is still in its infancy. To this day, Icelanders maintain a strange relationship with alcohol, and alcoholic beverages are sold exclusively in state-owned stores called Vínbúðin (translated as "Wine Store").
  • However, various brands of a cheap beer-like alcoholic beverage are sold on supermarket shelves. This product is designed to replicate the taste of beer but completely eliminate its alcoholic properties. Since many travelers are unaware of this, foreign visitors quite often triumphantly push full carts of this beverage.
  • Icelandic beer substitute may prevent you from having an explosive party, but its plus is that it will never prevent you from getting out of bed the next morning.

Water

The best drink in Iceland is free. Because of Iceland's large supply of fresh water, the water from every tap is of very high quality, and you can ask for a free glass of water wherever you go.
Despite the fact that selling water in Iceland is like selling sand in the Sahara, bottled water in Iceland is sold at an inflated price.

- Play
- App Store
